More than 4 in 10 Americans maintain a strict belief about creationism, according to a Gallup poll conducted in May. Results show that 42 percent of respondents indicated their belief that God created humans in their present form sometime within in the last 10,000 years. That figure is largely unchanged since 1982, when 44 percent of Americans polled answered the same way.
About 31 percent believe in evolution, but with God guiding the path. Another 19 percent believe in evolution without any hand from a Supreme Being, up from only 9 percent in 1982.
Regular churchgoers — those who attend weekly — were by far the most likely to believe in strict creationism, with about 69 percent noting that belief. Evolution held stronger sway with younger and more-educated respondents, with only 28 percent of those aged 18-29 and 27 percent of college graduates adhering to creationism.
