To the editor:
Below is a poem I wrote, "Handle with Immediate Care."
The Veteran Reserved
Claiming more tears than glory
The 90-year-old eyes
Hold the 19-year-old in Normandy
Operation Overlord 2nd Ranger Battalion
Pointe du Hoc
Still climbing those cliffs
He only salutes the ones who did not make it
Reticent at first, unstoppable secrets spill forth
Eyewitness to history, it's not his story to bury
But a final duty to share
That which we must hear over and over ever again
So honor comes with wisdom
Real war a horror repulsive
Defines way too many lives
And fading voices warn what we quickly forget
That every day there are more veterans.
