  • The Leavenworth Police Department and Leavenworth school district will host a joint training for local law enforcement and school staff Wednesday at the former West Intermediate School, 1901 Spruce St.
The training is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. A number of law enforcement vehicles will be on site and in the vicinity of the former Intermediate School throughout the afternoon and early evening.
Sgt. Roger Hundley, of the Police Department's Special Operations Division, and Amy Sloan, director of support services for the school district, will lead the training of attendees who include building principals, district administrators and representatives of building emergency management teams.
The afternoon training will begin with an informational presentation on “Intruderology” — a multi-phased emergency management approach to combat violent intruders. Following the presentation, attendees will take part in a simulated school intruder/active shooter drill, which will also serve as a physical training exercise for the police department.
Ensuring student and staff safety in our school facilities is our top priority," Sloan said. "This is a unique opportunity for us to proactively utilize a school setting to simulate a potential act of violence and train our building leadership and staff on effective response options to save lives. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the city of Leavenworth Police Department to offer a training to educate both school employees and first responders of their roles and responsibilities."
