  • Investigators have no suspects in the homicide of Robert G. Lynch, Jr., a Leavenworth Police Department spokesman said.
Lynch, 53, was found dead May 22 in a room at Days Inn, 3211 S. Fourth St.
Police have not released the official cause of death, but have confirmed the case is being treated as a homicide.
A police report indicated a blunt object was the murder weapon.
"We continue to work on the case," said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, Leavenworth Police Department deputy chief.
He said the entire detective unit of the Leavenworth Police Department has been working on the case.
Nicodemus said police are awaiting laboratory results from evidence that was sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The deputy chief did not provide more details about the evidence being tested.
"It's evidence and we're not discussing physical evidence that we have," he said.
He said police also continue to review surveillance video as part of the investigation.
Nicodemus said there are a number of businesses in the area of the hotel that have video cameras.
Police believe Lynch died sometime between 6 p.m. May 21 and 11:20 a.m. the next day, which is when his body was discovered.
    Lynch was from Leavenworth.
Nicodemus said Lynch, who was a military veteran, was staying at Days Inn while transitioning between two residences.
Police initially could not locate Lynch's pickup truck, but it was found abandoned May 23 in the 100 block of South 17th Street.
Nicodemus said police have not received many tips from the public.
Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact Detective Tesh St. John of the Leavenworth Police Department at (913) 651-2260. People also can leave anonymous tips by calling 913-682-CLUE (2583).
Federal authorities also continue to investigate a recent homicide of an inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth.
Jeremy Nemerov, 48, was found unresponsive April 24 in his housing unit at the federal prison. He was taken to the hospital and died May 5.
USP spokesman Treavor Kroger said the case is being investigated by the FBI.
Nemerov received a 78-month sentence in the federal Eastern District of Missouri for conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
He arrived at the U.S. Penitentiary April 23, the day before he was found unresponsive.
His projected release date, with credit for good conduct, had been Dec. 13, 2018.
