  • A Leavenworth County judge has sentenced a Missouri man to life in prison for the rape of a 13-year-old child, the county attorney said in a news release.
David Cochran, 29, was sentenced Wednesday in Leavenworth County District Court to a life sentence without possibility of parole for a least 25 years. The sentence was pursuant to what is known as Jessica's Law, according to County Attorney Todd Thompson.
Cochran also will be subject to lifetime sex offender registration.
On Aug. 27, 2012, Cochran traveled from his residence in Peculiar, Missouri, to Leavenworth. He picked up the victim at 2 a.m. on a street near the home of the child’s mother.
Cochran drove the child to a Leavenworth motel, returning her to the street near her mother's house at 5 a.m., according to Thompson.
The following night, the victim’s mother observed text messages on the child’s cell phone regarding the plan for Cochran to pick up the girl in the middle of the night. The mother took the child’s cell phone to the Leavenworth Police Department and an investigation was conducted.
Cochran was said to be a lifelong friend and business associate of the child’s father, who lives in Missouri.
Cochran was convicted of rape April 9 in Leavenworth County District Court.
