  • Leavenworth High School senior guard Sean Ellis has found a home for the fall after agreeing to play basketball with the Wentworth Military Academy Red Dragons in Lexington, Mo.
Ellis signed his letter of intent Monday.
Leavenworth basketball coach Larry Hogan said Ellis wasn’t receiving a lot of recruiting attention after the season, so he directed him to Wentworth, where there was an open showcase for prospects.
It was then that Ellis showed Wentworth coaches he deserved a spot on the roster for the fall.
“We knew they were looking for players, I suggested that he go over to a shootout that they had,” Hogan said. “Sean was impressive and they decided that they wanted to offer him a scholarship.”
Ellis played shooting guard for the Pioneers last season after transferring from Lansing High School for his senior year and played a key role for the team after injuries limited the roster.
He said he liked the feel of Wentworth because of the school’s emphasis on education as well as athletics, and he meshed well with the team’s current roster.
“I got a chance to play with some of the guys they have,” Ellis said. “I really enjoyed playing with them.”
During his only season for the Pioneers, Ellis was part of the team’s 7-14 season that saw multiple games lost during the last 30 seconds.
Hogan said more than anything, Ellis will bring a determined work ethic to the Red Dragons next season.
“Sean’s a terrifically hard worker,” Hogan said. “I think his game is going to keep getting better and better and he’s going to get stronger and continue to play good basketball.”
