  • A rural Tonganoxie man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly leading authorities on a vehicle chase and then fleeing on foot near Lansing, a Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
The incident began around 12:30 p.m. when a deputy from the Sheriff's Office came upon a vehicle that had been stopped on the side of County Road 5 near Eisenhower Road.
The driver allegedly sped away from the deputy. The officer pursued the vehicle, Undersheriff Jim Sherley said.
"The speeds became excessive," Sherley said.
The deputy discontinued the pursuit as the suspect's vehicle approached 20th Street because of safety concerns. However, the officer was able to still see the vehicle as it was turned onto Mount Calvary Road.
Sherley said Mount Calvary Road eventually comes to a dead end, and officers found the vehicle parked behind a barn.
"We found the vehicle to be unoccupied," Sherley said.
Officers from the Sheriff's Office, Lansing Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol began searching for the suspect.
Sherley said officers started alerting residents in the area. One of the residents who was contacted later reported seeing the suspect.
Officers apprehended the 27-year-old man on property located along DeSoto Road.
The man reportedly had been running through a wooded area.
Sherley said the suspect had a 3-year-old child with him when he was apprehended. It's believed the child also had been in the vehicle with the suspect.
The suspect was arrested for allegations of attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, endangering a child and traffic violations, Sherley said.
The child was turned over to a relative.
The suspect is alleged to have been driving with a suspended license at the time the pursuit began.
