To the editor:
It’s time to vote in another primary, yet we are really busy with family and jobs. Often we know very little about those running for public office.
A previous letter writer listed David Powell’s superior credentials to be Kansas Insurance Commissioner. I think it also helps to know how candidates were involved in their communities before they chose to run for office.
Having lived in the El Dorado area before moving back to Leavenworth, I wanted to share a side of David Powell from a community service perspective.
He is from El Dorado, near where I lived. He is the one candidate who has an important but often overlooked quality we should look for when we elect public servants — the quality of selfless community service.
Powell has always been very active in his community/state and still volunteers across the state when there is a call for help. He is an Air Force veteran and he taught math in high school. His teaching ability shows in the way he communicates with the public: caring and knowledgeable.
He volunteered as chairman of the Bluestem American Red Cross and as a Red Cross water safety instructor. He was a Boy Scout scoutmaster.  He was a member of the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce.
Powell gave freely of his time following the Butler County floods and the Andover tornado.
We need people like him in office. I will be voting for Powell for Insurance Commissioner.
