  • Authorities have released the name of the girl who was killed in Friday's shootout in Leavenworth.
The victim has been identified as 5-year-old Cadence Harris of Leavenworth, Police Chief Pat Kitchens said.
Harris was killed as a man reportedly exchanged gunfire with police near the area of 20th Street and Metropolitan Avenue.
Leavenworth police were contacted around 7:30 p.m. regarding a car chase in Platte County, Missouri, involving a person identified as a kidnapping suspect and a small child. Kitchens said the incident apparently had started in Atchison before crossing into Missouri.
The car crossed the Centennial Bridge into Leavenworth, and local officers become involved.
Kitchens said the suspect stopped the car and allegedly engaged the officers with a weapon.
Kitchens said it initially was reported that the suspect had shot Harris, but he said authorities now are not certain that is what happened.
"We're not ruling anything out," he said.
The suspect was wounded during the shootout. He remains at the hospital.
Police have not released the suspect's identity.
The incident is being investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
