  • A recent Tonganoxie High School graduate has won the Democratic primary in the 42nd District for the Kansas House of Representatives.
The unofficial election results from Leavenworth and Douglas counties show Austin Lee Harris defeating Harold D. Fevurly, Jr., of rural Easton, in Tuesday's primary by a vote of 302 to 241.
The results will remain unofficial until the votes are canvassed.
"There's definitely a joy going around the house right now," Harris said when contacted Tuesday night.
Harris, 18, of Tonganoxie, said he wants to work with both sides of the aisle in the Statehouse and provide a voice for moderates in the 42nd District.
The 42nd District spans across western Leavenworth County and includes the cities of Easton and Tonganoxie. It also extends south into Douglas County and includes the city of Eudora.
The district currently is represented by Republican Connie O'Brien, who will face Harris in the Nov. 4 general election.
Harris received 233 votes in Leavenworth County. Fevurly received 194, according to results posted on the Leavenworth County website.
Harris received 69 votes in Douglas County. Fevurly received 47, according to the Douglas County website.
