  • Voter turnout in Leavenworth County for Tuesday's primary election was a little more than 13 percent, the county clerk said.
"Of course I wanted more than that," Janet Klasinski said.
The county clerk said 6,149 people in Leavenworth County voted in the primary. There were 46,538 registered voters in the county going into the election.
Out of the races for the Statehouse, there was only one local primary Tuesday night. That was on the Democratic side for the 42nd District for the Kansas House of Representative. Austin Lee Harris, of Tonganoxie, won this race, defeating Harold D. Fevurly Jr., of rural Easton.
The vote total was 302 to 241 in favor of Harris. This total includes votes from four precincts in Douglas County that are part of the 42nd District.
Republican voters in Leavenworth County differed with the rest of the state in the race for the U.S. Senate.
Incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts won the Republican primary statewide and will advance to the Nov. 4 general election. But in Leavenworth County, challenger Milton Wolf came in first. Wolf received 2,337 votes in Leavenworth County compared to 1,799 votes for Roberts.
Republican voters in Leavenworth County also differed with the rest of the state in their choice for the candidate for Kansas insurance commissioner. There were five Republican candidates in the race.
Ken Selzer won the statewide race, advancing to the general election.
In Leavenworth County, Beverly Gossage came in first with 1,246 votes. Selzer was second in the county with 1,041 votes.
The Leavenworth County election results will be unofficial until the votes are canvassed Monday by the Leavenworth County Commission.
Klasinski said Leavenworth County voters can now apply for advance ballots for the November general election.
"I think we'll have a pretty good November turnout," Klasinski said.
