Before local students head back to class next week, the Leavenworth area will be home to multiple sources of sports entertainment this weekend.
The Leavenworth Soccer Association is set to host its first annual Soccerfest at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Leavenworth Soccer Complex located next to Warren Middle School.
Highlighting Soccerfest will be the opportunity to meet and greet and a question-and-answer session with Sporting Kansas City defender Ike Opara, who was sidelined for the remainder of the season after an ankle injury in early April. Alongside Opara will be Missouri Comets mascot Calvin the K-9, who will be available for pictures.
In addition to the notable guests, there will be soccer skill challenges, raffles, dollar hot dogs and more as the LSA seeks to increase membership through an open registration which will also be available at the event.
In Lansing, residents will be given an opportunity to watch the Lansing Reds legion baseball team face alumni from the Lansing baseball program during the sixth annual Jake Walkup Tribute baseball game set to begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Lansing High School baseball field.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Jake Walkup scholarship fund, which provides a $500 annual scholarship to a member of the baseball program, football program and the Lansing High School band.
The tribute game will also play host to a silent auction, with items ranging from T-Bones tickets to a signed football from the Kansas City Chiefs.
While the game starts at 5 p.m., the day's festivities will begin at 3 p.m.
