  • Now that a new school year has started, the Leavenworth Police Department once again is enforcing school zones, a police spokesman said.
"There will be an adjustment period for everyone," said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, Leavenworth Police Department deputy chief.
He said officers understand people are once again getting used to school zones being in effect. But, police will issue tickets if warranted.
Classes for the 2014-15 school year began Monday in the Leavenworth School District.
Nicodemus said school zones in the city of Leavenworth require motorists to slow to 20 miles per hour.
He said the times when the school zones are in effect vary. But, the times are indicated on signs or by flashing yellow lights.
Nicodemus said the minimum ticket for speeding in a school zone in Leavenworth is $165, but the amount may increase depending on the circumstances.
