  • Hospital hosting scrub sale next week
    Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital, 711 Marshall St., in Leavenworth, is scheduled to host an on-site scrub sale from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday in the hospital's conference room.
    "Shop our huge selection for the latest in fashion tops, pants, jackets, shoes and accessories," according to a news release.
    Sale proceeds benefit hospital patients and employees.
    Secretary of State, state rep to appear for Republican Women's Club gathering
    The Leavenworth County Republican Women's Club's monthly program and luncheon will take place Monday at the Heritage Center, 109 Delaware, in Leavenworth.
    The luncheon is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m., with the program starting at noon.
    The program will feature Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State, and Willie Dove, 38th District state representative.
    Kobach began his term in January 2011. Kansas voters elected Kobach on a platform focused on stopping voter fraud. Both houses of the legislature adopted the Secure and Fair Elections Act with bipartisan majorities. Gov. Sam Brownback signed the bill into law in April 2011.
    Dove is running for his second term representing the 38th District, which includes parts of southern Leavenworth County.

    Investing class slated for Aug. 23 at Fort Leavenworth
    The Better Investing Kansas City Chapter is scheduled to teach a basic investing class in the Armed Forces Insurance conference room at Fort Leavenworth from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 23.
    "For those just beginning to invest, or who have minimal personal investing experience, this is the best way to begin your investing education," according to a news release. "You will learn the basic fundamentals of investing, terms and ratios, how to read Value Line, and complete the BI Stock Check List evaluating a growth company."
    The green Stock Selection Handbook, a $15 value, will be provided to all class participants for free. The class is recommended before taking the Stock Analysis course, slated to follow Sept. 6.
    "Become your own financial advisor so you know what is happening to your money, or at least keep your financial planner honest," the release states.

    Guest speaker to appear at Leavenworth church
    Annual elect lady services are scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at Christian Life Worship Center, 2601 S. Fourth St., in Leavenworth. Sister Iceola Gillom will be the guest speaker.
    Page 2 of 2 - Gillom worked for more than 34 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and continues to work as a contract EEO investigator with Resolution Services, LLC, of Lawrence. She has been a member of the Independent Baptist Church since 1977, and is currently active in mission ministry, Sunday school, intercessory prayer ministry, and IBC kitchen ministry.
    "Icy states that helping others makes her happy and she strives to live according to the Golden Rule," according to a news release. "She believes that if she can help somebody as she passes along, her living will not have been in vain."
    B.J. Landrum Jr. and Sr. are the pastors at Christian Life Worship Center. Sister Charline Landrum will be the event hostess. The event is open to the public.
