  • Marti Crow, a member of the Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital Auxiliary, said the organization she belongs to provides a number of benefits to the Leavenworth hospital.
Upcoming events organized and hosted by the Auxiliary are the latest examples of the group's contributions.
Crow, of Leavenworth, tells us more about the Auxiliary and the events in this Q5.
    1. Marti, what is the Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital Cushing Auxiliary Scrub Sale?
"First, let me tell you about the Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital Auxiliary. This is a group open to anyone, whether they volunteer at the hospital or not. The group meets regularly on the second Monday of each month at 10 a.m. in the hospital conference room. The mission of the Auxiliary is to support and assist the employees and patients of our local hospital. Our dues are $10 per year.
"The Auxiliary is hosting a Scrub Sale for hospital employees and other people in our community who wear scrubs for work or leisure. This is our second annual sale. The Auxiliary receives a portion of the sale proceeds, which will be used to benefit Cushing employees and patients."
    2. When and where will it be?
"The sale will be conducted on the second floor in the North Conference Room. Shoppers may come into Cushing's main entrance on Marshall Street and take the elevator or stairs to the second floor.
"Cushing is located at Seventh Street and Marshall, one block off South Broadway.
    “The times for shopping are Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and  Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m."
    3. What sort of selection will the sale offer?
"Life Uniforms, which sponsors scrub sales at other hospitals in the Kansas City area, will bring a large selection of tops, pants, jackets, shoes and accessories with a broad range of sizes.
“Last year, our customers and employees were very pleased with the array of choices. Our local scrubs-wearers can shop for their needs while providing a good service to our local community hospital."
    4. What other events does the Cushing Auxiliary have planned?
"The Cushing Auxiliary is a busy group. Our next big event is our annual Cushing Card Party. It will be held on Oct. 1 at the Heritage Center at 11:30 a.m. We will have a luncheon first, then cards.
"We invite card groups as well as single players to come and enjoy an afternoon of fun.
“We will also be making a drawing for an historic quilt.
“Each quilt block was hand sewn by Cushing employees and volunteers.
“It depicts scenes about Cushing, Leavenworth, and Kansas. Tickets may be obtained at the Cushing Gift Shop or at the Card Party."
Page 2 of 2 - 5. Who will the sale help and why is it important residents support the benefit?
"The funds raised by the Saint Luke's Cushing Auxiliary are used for a number of local projects.
“The Auxiliary provides scholarships to Leavenworth County high school graduates and college students who are seeking a career in the health care field.
"Recently the Auxiliary provided funds to replace the tables and chairs in the Cushing Cafeteria and purchased two recliners, a flat screen television and a blanket warmer for the room where patients receive chemotherapy.
“The Auxiliary also provided funds for a new refrigeration unit for the food service department.
“Over many years, the Auxiliary has purchased automatic doors, decorated waiting rooms, provided educational funding for employees and many other enhancements.
“Many of the amenities around the hospital have been provided over the years through the efforts of the Cushing Auxiliary."
