  • A former Fairmount Township Fire Department chief is charged with stealing more than $14,000 from the township.
Jeff H. Theno, of Basehor, made his first appearance in the case Friday in Leavenworth County District Court. He's charged with one county of felony theft.
He is accused of stealing $14,258 from Fairmount Township from March 5 to May 1, 2013.
The crime is alleged to have occurred while Theno was volunteering as fire chief.
Theno appeared in court Friday with his attorney, Jacquelyn Rokusek, who waived a reading of the charge against her client.
District Judge Gunnar Sundby asked the attorney if she was ready to schedule a preliminary hearing in the case.
"I would like some time," said Rokusek, who requested an additional 30 days.
A status conference was scheduled for Oct. 3.
Theno did not speak during the court appearance.
The former fire chief was sent a notice to appear in the case, and he has not been taken into custody.
Theno stepped down as chief and retired from the Fire Department on July 29, Acting Fire Chief Chuck Magaha said.
Magaha, who had been the department's assistant chief, was appointed acting chief last week.
Magaha said Theno was the department's chief for more than 10 years.
