  • In case you haven't noticed, the calendar is now halfway through the final full month of summer.
It’s the middle of August — the “pack everything you wanted to get done this summer before school starts again” month.
Summer, most likely, has come and is almost gone, far too quickly. If you’re like me, you look forward to summer every year as a time to work your way through a long list of things.
That long list that you made back in the spring, things you wanted to accomplish or experience, seems to get squeezed into August, even into the last days or weekends of August, if those things even get done.
The apostle Paul has some great advice for you and me with regard to our lives, and our tendency to pack them full of this, that and the other thing.
In Colossians 3:17, he tells us that “whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord, Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
That verse comes after a section of Scripture that speaks of living in the peace of Christ, with His word rooted in your heart. It brings focus to our busy and frustrating lives; it brings focus on what should be important to us.
It sets the crosshairs of our sights on what they need to be set upon — our Lord, Jesus, His love, grace and care.
You and I may still be frustrated with what we may get done or not get done, but if our lives are centered in our Lord, giving thanks for what we do get done, and for what He has done for us, then we can rest assured that we are in good hands.
So, as you work these last remaining days of August to pack in all that you want to accomplish this summer, don’t forget what has already been accomplished by the Lord in sending His Son to do the work that you and I could not do: the salvation of our souls by Jesus’ atoning death on the cross. From the cross, He spoke with certainty: “It is finished.”
All that needs to be done for us has been done.
We are now able to live our lives in gratitude, doing whatever we do in the name of the Lord Jesus.
