  • A Leavenworth man was pronounced dead at the scene after he crashed into a sign Sunday off of Santa Fe Trail, a Leavenworth Police Department spokesman said.
The wreck was reported at 9:55 a.m.
Travis Munsterman, 18, was driving north on Santa Fe Trail in a 2000 Pontiac Firebird. He lost control of the vehicle, and it left the roadway and crashed into a sign for Fort Leavenworth's Hancock gate.
The sign has a rock base, said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, Police Department deputy chief.
Munsterman apparently had not been wearing a seat belt. There was no one else in the vehicle.
"It was apparent speed was a contributing factor," Nicodemus said.
He said investigators are trying to determine how fast Munsterman was driving. The speed limit for that stretch of road is 40 miles per hour.
Nicodemus said investigators also are trying to determine what other factors may have contributed to the crash.
