  • A Leavenworth police officer ended her pursuit of a speeding motorcyclist after the suspect crossed into Missouri, a police spokesman said.
The pursuit began at 7:54 p.m. Thursday at 20th Street and Metropolitan Avenue.
The officer was monitoring traffic near a road construction site when she noticed a motorcycle traveling east in the westbound lanes of Metropolitan Avenue. The motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Maj. Dan Nicodemus, Leavenworth Police Department deputy chief, estimated the motorcycle was traveling in excess of 80 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.
"The officer attempted to stop the motorcycle," Nicodemus said.
But, the officer lost sight of the vehicle due to its speed.
The officer ended the pursuit at Metropolitan and 11th Street. But, the officer continued traveling east on Metropolitan Avenue, checking intersections for crashes.
The officer also went across Centennial Bridge into Missouri. She turned into a convenience store lot on the other side of the bridge and spotted the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist sped away from the convenience store at a high rate of speed, traveling west toward the bridge. The officer followed.
Just before reaching the bridge, the motorcyclist turned around and then turned onto the Missouri 45 Spur.
The Leavenworth officer did not pursue.
Nicodemus said Platte County, Mo., authorities were notified of the motorcycle, but they apparently were unable to stop the vehicle.
There also had been a passenger on the motorcycle.
"There was no license plate on the bike," Nicodemus said.
