To the editor:
Fact: Due to the poor mileage of ethanol, Americans lose 92 billion miles of free travel annually. Eliminating ethanol would reduce transportation costs.
A gallon of ethanol has 47,238 less BTUs than a gallon of gasoline.  Ethanol production last year was 13,312 million gallons. This 13,312 million gallons times 47,238 BTUs equals 628,832 billion BTUs less than gasoline.
The average vehicle requires 6,821 BTUs per mile. Thus, ethanol causes consumers to lose 92 billion miles of free travel annually due to its poor mileage.
