  • The city of Lansing is building a reputation for safety.
On the heels of one website in August declaring Lansing as the second safest city in Kansas, a second site moved the city one step higher.
On Tuesday, www.safechoicesecurity.com named Lansing as the safest city in the state, leading a list of 14 cities with populations ranging from 5,000 to nearly 130,000.
"Compiling the list involved comparing our databases with FBI census statistics for (more than) 150 cities in Kansas, including both property and violent crimes," wrote Kim Andrews, a representative of the website, in an email. "Lansing should be very proud of its prestigious position on our list."
The website included the following summary information about the city:
"Lansing, which is located on the Missouri River in the eastern region of Leavenworth County, is Safe Choice Security's choice for our safest city in Kansas for 2014," according to the site. "Recently ranked 88th among the best 100 places to live by Money Magazine, Lansing is the second most populated city in Leavenworth (County), and forms a part of the metropolitan area of Kansas City.
"The city is protected by its police department, which works alongside its municipal court, and organizes patrol services 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Apart from neighborhood patrols, traffic control and counter-drug and alcohol enforcement, the police force also partners with local citizens to carry out community policing to improve the safety of its residents."
The website indicated there is one violent crime in Lansing for every 1,000 residents, and 5.94 property crimes per 1,000 properties. It lists Lansing as being 85 percent safer than all U.S. cities.
Rounding out the top five were Prairie Village, Leawood, Spring Hill and Ulysses, respectively. Leavenworth did not make the top 14, but was rated last month by Movoto Real Estate as the 21st safest city in the state.
The only other Leavenworth County city to make the list was Tonganoxie, which was rated 13th.
"Tonganoxie was named for a local Indian chief whose name means 'short' in the Delaware language," the website states. "The well known clothing retailer Peruvian Connection is based out of the city, along with several other businesses. … The city boasts a low crime rate, beautiful parks and trails, and a high quality education system.
"Though the Tonganoxie Police Department is small, it offers a numbers of services for its citizens, including vacation home watches, safe house checks, training for cadets, and animal control. It also takes an active interest in senior citizens and child safety, and provides useful and relevant information on its website."
Lansing city officials said Tuesday the city had heard about its latest rating from Safe Choice Security, and they planned to publicize the information soon.
Ratings that reflect positively on the city can only help as it tries to attract new residents and businesses, city officials said.
