A Leavenworth County EMS employee ended up being an EMS patient after an ambulance was involved in a crash, a police spokesman said.

The crash was reported at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at 18th and Ottawa streets.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said a 24-year-old rural Leavenworth man was driving a 2013 Chevrolet ambulance south on 18th Street.

Nicodemus said the driver was responding to an emergency, and he was operating the ambulance’s lights and sirens.

The ambulance collided with a westbound 2002 Ford F-350 as the EMS driver was proceeding through the intersection at 18th and Ottawa streets.

The EMS driver was taken to the hospital in another ambulance. No other injuries were reported.

The pickup truck was driven by an 18-year-old Leavenworth man.

Nicodemus said officers are still reviewing what citations to issue in the case.
