A man was taken into custody in western Leavenworth County after he allegedly battered a woman in a neighboring county, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

Authorities in Leavenworth County were notified of the incident around 8:30 a.m. Friday, Leavenworth County Undersheriff Jim Sherley said.

The suspect, a 63-year-old man, allegedly struck a woman with a hammer in Jefferson County. The man also is alleged to have fired at the woman with a pistol, according to Sherley.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office was notified the suspect may have gone to a residence in Leavenworth County following the incident.

Sherley said the residence is located on Dempsey Road, not far from the Jefferson County line.

“He was non-compliant,” Sherley said of the suspect.

Sherley said deputies did not have contact with the suspect until authorities entered the residence and took him into custody.

Authorities entered the residence after a search warrant was obtained for the home. An arrest warrant for the suspect also had been obtained.

Sherley said the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office utilized its Tactical Assistance Group. The Leavenworth Police Department provided an armored vehicle.

The suspect was apprehended around 7 p.m. Friday. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail.
