Well, it’s been awhile.
For that I’m sorry, but there is a good reason.
Right around the end of September I started to research an in-depth feature idea. To say the least, it has consumed me since.
After two months of research, interviews and writing, the piece is finally done. It will run tomorrow and I hope some find it uplifting, or at least interesting.
Any who, the story is by far one of the biggest and most extensive pieces I’ve ever written so I’m really excited to see its completion. I’m more excited to see it printed, nervous actually, but the point is that now that I'm finished with it I can get back to this beautiful blog of mine.
A lot has happened since I last entered a post and so over the next two weeks I’m going to rehash a few headlines that caught my attention over the past two months…
First up, Leavenworth football makes the playoffs.
How awesome was that. I was able to cover two of the team’s three districts games, as well as the pep rally and state playoff game, so I had a front seat to all the excitement.
Kudos to all the coaches, fans, school and community for the support they gave the team. It was a cool scene to witness and for the first time in a long time, football was relevant again in Leavenworth.
There are so many good topics to discuss from this event but the biggest one, in my opinion, was the players.
To have that much belief, determination and dedication to overcome three decades of losing is a major statement about the kind of young men in that program.
I can only tip my invisible cap to their spirit, which stayed strong through what seemingly was another lost season. Really, it was an exciting thing to cover and witness so congrats to all involved.
I also think the playoff run was a huge declaration that head coach Kevin Kopecky is the right man for the job. After seeing him in action for this fall, I fully believe that Leavenworth has finally found a football coach that can lead them out of the 6A cellar.
Brent Lager joined the Leavenworth Times in 2010 after a year and a half of covering high school sports for the Platte County Citizen. Before that, he previously worked for the Columbia Missourian as well as Cumulus Broadcasting in Columbia, Mo.
