One of the more unique feelings I experience as a sports reporter is when I cover an indoor swimming competition.
The main reason why is because these events usually take place during the winter. So after leaving near below temperatures outside, one enters into an 80-degree bio dome inside.
It literally feels like walking through a windless, muggy summer-day while fitted in full snow parka gear. But besides the mocking warmth of the aquatic center, here are a few thoughts from the Leavenworth boys’ swim Invitational.
First, Lansing looked very good. Actually, there were too many quality performances for me to single out anyone particular. It was a dominant performance by all.
However, I must give kudos to the Lions’ 200-medley relay team. The quartet of Eli Dossey, Zach Roller, Dion DePaolis and Stephen Szmed blazed to a time of 2:02.77, which easily won them first — very impressive.
For the Pioneers, it was another step in the right direction. The squad’s sheer lack of bodies means Leavenworth will always struggle to win overall meets.
But the hope is that individually, the LV swimmers get better every time out and then they can build from there. Baby steps first, then big steps later.
And that is exactly what Leavenworth did Tuesday as eight Pioneers set new PRs in their respective events. Another good step for a very young squad.
