I was able to cover my first two Immaculata basketball games last Friday and I wanted to share my thoughts.

Now, these are just observations from one sitting so don’t take them as the gospel truth. I have not been around either team nearly enough to know a lot about either squad.

Still, I’m dying to share my first impressions.

Immaculata Boys

The team, as always under coach Mike Connelly’s tutelage, seemed fundamentally sound and gave forth the expected full effort.

I like the offensive combination of seniors Corey Leintz and Adam Sewell, and it was obvious that the team would like to run, as it should.

The Raiders seem built around its speed, which it will need to be because it lacks size inside. And that is where I think the team will have its biggest struggles this year.

To make up for that shortage of size and depth in the front court, the team will need to be faster, quicker and more aggressive than its opponents. On Friday against Horton, it was.

Hopefully the team can keep that up throughout the year.

Immaculata girls

The Lady Raiders will always be dangerous with Brittany Simek and Liz Todd on the floor.

The problem is the team simply lacks more weapons besides those two. Considering also how aggressive Simek can be, foul trouble will be an issue. Fatigue will factor in too.

Yet, if the squad can develop another scorer or two to join the two stalwarts, there is hope.

The defense will need to shore itself up, but I’m not too worried about that. Coach Terry Jordan will get them going on that end.

The key will be who will step up offensively.
