It’s spring! Cut the Cord on Cable

By Holan Kerrick

Each spring, as the weather gets nicer, I spend less time watching TV.  I guess this is a good thing except for the fact that I’m paying for cable and DVR that I’m not using.  I’m not a fan of paying for something I’m not using.  When May rolls around and my DVR gets 90% full and the weather is too nice to spend that much time playing catch up on the DVR, I unplug my DVR and head to the cable office to alter my service.  I will drop down from digital service with DVR to a basic cable with 60 channels or so. Since I know I have this love/hate relationship with my DVR, I don’t enter into a two year contract with the cable company.  You might be thinking, I don’t want to watch the shows on a tiny computer screen.  I know the feeling, so I have a few options when it comes to connecting to the TV and finding your favorite shows.

Where can I find the shows?

Almost all the major networks carry their primetime shows online and will post the new episodes usually the day after it airs.  I create a folder under my browser bookmarks to favorite the networks for quick access.  Some websites, like the paid version Hulu will create a playlist based on your favorites and add new shows as they are added to Hulu.

Free Options

Paid Options

  • Netflix
  • HULU – paid subscription ($10 per month)  Just be aware that the mobile app doesn’t offer all the TV show streaming meaning some shows can only be view via the Hulu website.
  • HBO on the GO – I put this under the paid version because you have to be a HBO subscriber to access this service.

The Downside to watching TV Online

  • During peak time like 7-9pm you will find that the streaming sites are slower due to everyone else catching up on their favorite shows.
  • The quality on some streaming sites won’t be as good as cable especially when streaming on a very large TV.
  • You have to wait at least day after the show airs to catch it online.
  • Some TV Shows aren’t available online.
  • You will still need high speed internet to handle the streaming data.

The Pros to going streaming

  • Less Cable Bill
  • Less commercials.  You may still have commercials but they are usually two – 30 sec spots in a half hour making a 30 minute show only 20 minutes to watch.

How to connect to your TV

  • Apple Products
    -Apple TV
    -HDMI Connector
  • Hook your Computer up to your TV via a switch.
-The Wireless Laptop/Projector to HDTV allows users to watch and share any notebook/PC content (such as pictures, movies and presentations) and any Internet content, on their HDTV, a remote projector or monitor, without cable limitations.   The PC Adapter connects to a USB port (available in all notebooks/PCs) and the A/V Adapter connects to an HDMI port  available in all flat TVs) or VGA port (available in all projectors and monitors), for wireless connectivity between any notebook/PC and any TV/projector/monitor. Audio is supported via the HDMI port (with the video) or via a separate Audio jack for a complete wireless audio/video experience.  View a more detail PDF sheet of a computer switch

ReWind Wednesday: Smooth Criminal

By Holan Kerrick

I was buying a new gift card today for my iTunes account and remembered why I started loading the pre-paid cards onto my account. A few years back I was checking my bank account online and notice that there were three charges of $100 each to my debit card from iTunes. At that time, I thought it was strange since I had been using Amazon for downloading my music. I quickly grabbed my cell phone and called the bank while at the same time logging into iTunes and changed my password. The bank disputed the charges and restored the charged amounts to my account. Apple locked the account from any future purchases while I merged to a new Apple account.

Luckily I caught the mistake before more damage was done to my checking account.

Since then I load iTunes pre-paid gift cards to my account without linking a credit card. This way if someone hacks into my account I am only out the amount of the gift card and I don’t have to mess with restoring my credit with the banks. (Under my Apple ID, I have "none" selected as the payment option.)

The iconic thing about this whole thing is that all the songs the hacker purchased can be found under the purchased tab on my old account.

Let’s Break it Down Barney Style: What do to if you are hacked.

- Call the bank/credit card company to report the theft
- Change your password immediately. The password should have 1 capital letter, 1 lowercase letter, and at least one number. To make a more difficult password, consider using a pattern on your keyboard. For example you could use the pattern !@34QWer on your keyboard.

Exercising is not just about dedication or will power.

By Holan Kerrick

Sometimes going to the gym is a production in itself. I need the heart rate monitor, e-reader, the smartphone, the iPod, my gym only sneakers and water bottle, oh my! I’m just exhausted by thinking of having to make sure everything is charged and packed. Once I get to the elliptical I set up my “command center” so that I can be entertained for the next hour or so jumping from the reading an e-book, to watching a video, to texting, to listening to music, then back to an e- book. I figure that if I entertain my mind, I can trick my body into exercising. But then I realize that I forgot my ear phones. I packed up the “command center” and head to a step class. Oh joy…

See how I really feel about step class in this video I made with the Action Movie iPhone app.

ReWind Wednesday! The Perfect Man isn't on my Calendar!

By Holan Kerrick

In preparing for Valentine’s Day, or what I like to call "Single Awareness Day", I was playing with my cell phone. I asked Siri, the interactive personal assistant on my iPhone4s, "Where to find the perfect man?" She responded with what I think was a slight hint of attitude – “I don’t see the perfect man on your calendar.” Great! Now my phone is telling me that I can’t find the perfect man! So what do I do? I dip my toes into the pond of online dating to find the perfect frog to kiss and turn into a prince. Whoopee! We all wish that online dating was as easy as the commercials make it look and secretly wish that all the people look like our favorite celebrity but let’s join reality. Although it may not be like the commercials, online dating can be an interesting experience and will hopefully keep the parents at bay about “finding someone special” for a couple of months. Here are several types of online dating “ponds” that you might want to check into as you look for your frog.

  • Limited matches based on questions. One website in particular will ask you thousands of questions in order to match you with the perfect mate based on your answers. If you make it to the end of the list of questions and still want to try online dating then continue on soldier! You are presented with profiles that are compatible with your answers. You don't see any other profiles expect for the profiles that the website wants you to see.
  • Ten questions to your match. Other website focus on questions such as your wants and must haves in the future soul mate. The site will give you matches based on your date criteria but you can view anyone profile from anywhere in the country. I find this a little creepy that people from across the country can see my profile and “poke” me. What are we in kindergarten again, where the boy hits the girl to let her know he likes her.
  • Window Shopping Sites. Open profile sites allow you to view profile like window shopping for a date. I know several people who have met their significant other on this site. Just be aware of these sites, they usually have more men than women ratio. Most men on these sites are going after a booty call than instead of a long term a relationship.

I’ll admit it; I once met a long term boyfriend through online dating service. Unfortunately, the relationship came to a screeching end when I discovered he wasn't being very truthful. It probably worked out for the best though; he was too much like my ex-husband. Keep in mind these tips when looking for your fog in the ponds on online dating.

Use a different email address. Have one email account that does not list your full name in the email address or in the display. I use a childhood nickname that is common as the display name since I have such an unusual first name. Check to make sure your phone number is private. It’s unbelievable how much information you can find on a reverse look up on a cell number. You can check with your phone company on disabling the caller id for your phone number. Dating sites have now start adding calling features where you can use their site as the middle man to protect your phone number.

Backgrounds checks are your friend. Getting serious about someone? Spend the $20-30 on a background check. This will quickly tell you if you have a toad and not a frog. My thought is that it’s worth the money for my own security to know if I’m dating someone who is a serial killer. This is what tipped me off that something wasn’t quite right with the long-term boyfriend after I discovered he had an apartment in Miami for three years but didn’t really live there.

Schedule a Meet’n Greet. A meet’n greet is an excellent way to meet someone for a cup of coffee and skip out easily if it doesn’t work out. After spending four hours on a date with a guy who didn’t look anything like his photo and admitted he still lived with his mother, I learned this tip the hard way. Sometimes I like to take my dog on meet’n greets, because let’s be honest; if my dog doesn’t like you I probably won’t like you either. Lock Down Social Networking Sites. You don't want a crazy cyber stalker you met on an online dating site knowing where you work, who your friends are, and other personal information about you. Just remember if you don’t find your soul mate in one pond there are a lot of other ponds.

Have you notice your pictures are gathering digital dust from not being used?  Take a few minutes to personalize gifts from all those snapshots for an upcoming graduation, birthday, wedding, promotion or retirement.

Photo books – Start your own library of family trips and life events with photo books.  If you are just starting your first book mixbox.com or Shutterfly  are good places to start. Both offer simple drop and drag formats.    If you want more freedom in customizing your books, Picaboo is a wonderful option. Picaboo offer the most freedom when it comes to digital scrapbooking.

Calendars – Personalized calendars make great gifts or make a work cubicle homey.  Mpix and Shutterfly  offer multiple options for calendar sizes, types, and layout. If you’re looking for something different in a calendar try making a dry erase calendar.

Growth Chart – A wall clinging growth chart from mpix.com won’t mess up your walls and stays intact if you move or redecorate.  This would be a great idea for military families or other families who move often.

Canvas Art- Looking to turn your pictures into master pieces?  Digipix.us offers a variety of photo effects from silhouettes, brush strokes, wood cut, charcoal sketches and sign-in boards.  The sign-in boards would be a great gift for graduation, wedding, birthdays or retirement parties. Gel Skins – Show your personal style on your Smartphone, laptop, tablet or other gadgets with graphical gel skins that stick to your gadget. They protect your device from scratches, will not harm your gadget and can be removed.   I have a gel skin on my iPad from GelSkins, but  uniqueskins  also offers gel skin products.  If you are looking for something really cool for a wall, check out the life-sized custom Wall Skins from Unique Skin.

ReWind Wednesday! Find, Pin, Share with Pinterest

By Holan Kerrick

When my sister got married in 2001, she carried around a large three ring binder filled to the brim with fabric samples, ideas, and other random thoughts.

Fast forward ten years and the three ring wedding binder has been replaced with Pinterest, a social media outlet for pinning your collection of ideas to virtual pinboards. A virtual pinboard for bridesmaid dresses, flowers, dresses, and food become the new standard for brides to be. The wedding party can leave comments about the dresses, flowers, and ties brides pin up on their virtual pinboards. Don’t forget to keep tabs on what the wedding experts of the world are pinning to their boards. The Knot and Style Me Pretty are getting in on the Pinterest trend, pinning hundreds of creative and artistic ideas.

Not getting married, not a problem! People use pinboards to share their personal style, decorate their homes, and manage their favorite recipes. Best of all, you can view pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards are a fun way to learn new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. Not sure what to get your sister for her Birthday? Check out her board for ideas!

Pinterest can be used to pull your thoughts into one place. From the wedding planning to the new home owner collecting decorating ideas, it’s up to you how you manage your pinboards and what you pin.

I have pinboards in these categories:

  1. NWNH – No Way, No How will I ever consider making these ideas! (very true)
  2. Funny but True Sayings (things you want to say to people but won't)
  3. Fabulous Food (recipes to look at but not try)
  4. Wish List (don't need, but want)
  5. The Bucket List.
  6. Wish I was there (Travel Ideas)

Pinterest is currently requesting invitations to become a member. If you would like an invitation, send me an email at gadgetgirl@gadgetgirltips.com. You will need a Facebook or Twitter account to log in once you receive an invitation.

I Run from Zombies!

By Holan Kerrick

I’m not a big running fan. Ok, I’ll confess. I despise running, but I found that the Zombie Run app makes running more tolerable. The Zombie Run app is an interactive game that reacts to the movement of your iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android gadgets as you run. You can take the game to a track, treadmill, or outside. It doesn’t matter where you run as long as you keep running and don’t get caught by the zombies.

Zombie Run! App Review from Gadgetgirltips.comYou are designated as Runner Number 5 in the beginning as you go on a missions to collect items like medicine, batteries, and ammo while avoiding the zombie mobs. Dynamic radio messages and voice recordings, along with your own playlist, gives you directions on where to find the supplies, the locations of the zombies, and encouragement if you are running too slow. When you're back in the township, you build up your defenses to earn more missions. As you complete more missions you learn there’s a deeper mystery to be uncovered, puzzles to be solved, websites to be discovered, and documents to be viewed. You will discover the truth of what’s happened to the world.

So if I decide to go for a run, I’m going to run from Zombies!

ReWind Wedensday: The Game of the Job Search

By Holan Kerrick

Sometimes I wish the job search was like playing a game of monopoly. You roll dice and BAM! You have a new occupation; pass go and collect $200. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way, and it’s a painful, time consuming processing.

The cycle of searching online job posting, networking, customizing resumes and cover letters continues until you find that perfect position. Below are several tips that can save time and ease the pain during the job search.

Game of the Job Search - Gadgetgirltips.com

1. Google Yourself. Before you start your job search, Google your name and see what comes up for your name. Companies are now checking social media websites to find more information about their potential employees. Your Facebook profile should be at the highest privacy setting and uncheck the “make searchable” option. Do you have a common name like John Smith? Add the city where you live or work behind the name in the search box. Ask yourself, “Would I hire myself based on the information I found online?”

2. Set up Automatic Email Notices of New Job Postings: Websites such as USAJobs.gov, Monster.com, and Indeed.com offer email notices on saved searches. I’ve also seen many company websites that now offered the same feature on their company positions. Let the website do the work for you alerting you by email on new job openings based on your search criteria.

3. Network on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a social networking website designed for business professionals. It allows you to share work-related information with other users and keep an online list of professional contacts. Similar to Facebook, users can create profiles within LinkedIn that are business-oriented rather than personal. For example, a LinkedIn profile highlights education and past work experience, which makes it appear similar to a resume. I have found this to be an excellent resource for networking with recruiters and land the interview.

4. Find the Niche sites. Does your profession have a dedicated website for job postings? To find these niche sites, type your profession then job posting (nursing job posting).

5. Hire a Professional Resume Writer. Not getting any hits on your resume? You might want to check into having your resume professional re-written. There are several companies out there, and they are not cheap, but utilizing the service might speed up the job search.

Good luck on your search for the perfect position.

I’m My Own Paparazzi

By Holan Kerrick

Cameras, Cameras, Cameras! I can’t get enough of them. Each one has its time and place for capturing that single snapshot of that once in a life time trip. Although I tend to get teased by family members for sometimes carrying so many cameras on a vacation, I think it’s worth it when you see my reasons for each camera and the pictures they take.

The Cameras

  • Digital-SLR, aka the wannabe professional photography. Also known as a D-SLR, these cameras have been widely adapted by the main stream camera market as high quality cameras at a reasonable price. The typical D-SLR will start at an introductory level for around $800. Lenses are normally sold separately unless you can find a package deal that includes the camera body and lens. I keep two lens in my camera bag, a short and long distance. D-SLRs are good for high action events like sporting events, active kids, and pets because of their fast shutter speed. Like buying a new car, you should try out all the features and handle the camera body before deciding on which brand and model. I have a Canon Rebel but some people prefer Nikon D-SLRs.
  • The Concert Camera/Traveler, aka I want good pictures without the big D-SLR. When I was planning my two week trip to Turkey this past year, I didn’t want to lug around my DSLR and went on a search for a pocket camera. I wanted a good zoom, a camera that could fit in my pocket, high quality pictures, at a decent price. I found the Canon Powershot Sx23OHS for around $325 and it met all my requirements. This little jewel also doubles as my concert camera since the big D-SLR isn’t allowed in the venues. I used it on my concert photographs that were published in 2011. I definitely give it two thumbs up.
  • The Waterproof Camera, aka the tough camera. On my first cruise, I wanted to capture every minute to include the two waterslides on the ship. There was no way I was going to take my super expensive D-SLR to a cruise ship’s pool or a trip to the beach. This led me on a search for a good waterproof camera that takes good pictures, and decent videos. I also wanted the security of knowing that it wouldn’t break if my 5 year old niece dropped it on the ground. The best waterproof camera I found was the Olympus Tough Camera series, which took amazing pictures underwater. What’s great with a waterproof digital camera is that you don’t have to wait to get the film developed to see your underwater pictures. With a waterproof camera you can focus on having fun and not have to worry about your camera. It’s also fun to freak people around you when you throw a camera in the pool on purpose.
  • Smartphone Camera, aka I’m cool like that. The cameras on smart phones have come a long way since they were first introduced in 1990's. I use my Smartphone camera about 80% of time for my photoblog and will upload the pictures directly to the blog from the phone. A Smartphone camera shouldn’t be used as a replacement for a traditional camera due to its limitation in shutter speed (how fast the camera takes the picture), zoom, quality, or flash strength that you have in a traditional digital camera. Unless you have a Smartphone that came out in the past year, the image size of the photos will not be high resolution, limiting what you will be able to do with the photos.

The Bag

  • All my accessories, chargers, lens, and cameras fit into my Lowerpro sling back camera bag. I love this bag because it can double as a tripod, allows quick access to my D-SLR camera and comes with its own rain jacket. The bag itself is so compact yet spacious that I have used it as a day bag while taking in city tours.
No matter which camera you choose, head to a photography shop where they are usually more than willing to give you a few pointers to get you started on your new camera.

FitBit Me

By Holan Kerrick
My parents’ rock! Why you may ask? Even though my sister, brother-in-law and I are grown adults we still receive Easter baskets. Not only do we get remembered, we sometimes get some really cool but sometimes non-traditional items.  This past Easter, my somewhat non-tech parents blew me away when I opened my little green plastic egg to discover a little plastic clip.  With no writing on the device and with no packaging, I asked "what is it?" My mom exclaimed “It's a FitBit!” as she reached inside her shirt to pull out her clip on device.  She pushed the button on the device and the device lit up with the amount of steps, flights climbed, calories burned, and miles walked she had completed already that day.  As we were walking out the door to a family event, she was telling me about the dashboard charts that record the steps taken, a place to enter you food intake, and even the number of hours slept.  It was just torture…a new gadget and no time to figure the ins and outs of my new toy!

Let’s break this down Barney style, FitBit uses the simple theory of burning more calories than you consume to encourage a calorie deficit which results in weight loss. FitBit uses an invisible Wi-Fi network to keep your FitBit website dashboard up to date to your device. Before you clip on and go, you will want to register your FitBit device with the website before it will properly record your steps.

After registering, I clipped my little device which I have nicknamed Jarvis and learned the following from wearing FitBit for one week.

· I walk an average of 12000 steps a day between the gym, walking the dog, and everyday walking around.
· I sleep walk an average of 280 steps between midnight and 5am.  The FitBit device will reset your counter automatically at midnight.  To set the sleep feature, just remember to enter your information on the website or activate the stop watch feature on the device.
· Jarvis doesn't record steps when you are on a bike or lifting weights.  :(
· Jarvis doesn't like water just like my cat Miss Tobie, so it is important to remove it from your clothes before washing.  I caught this one just in time yesterday.  A little saying popped up on the device that said Thank You, Holan.
· I can get almost half of my daily steps in one step aerobics class.
· My dog, Jackson is very fond of Jarvis since we are going on multiple walks per day to get to 10,000 steps. A 1.75 mile walk is about 3500 steps depending on your stride.
· I have found that the family is now in competition to see who has the most steps in random checks.  It's the new swag bucks competition.

Let me know if you get biten by FitBit!

ReWind Wednesday! Turn Old Gadgets into Money!

By Holan Kerrick

gazlleWhen the new iPad came out last month, I considered selling my iPad2 to upgrade to the new iPad. With my search hat on and armed with my laptop, I went off in search of a website to sell my old iPad2. After a few moments, I stumbled upon Gazelle.com, a reCommerce service helps you sell and recycle your used electronics. I answered a few questions regarding the condition and hit the magic calculate button. I was offered $300 for my iPad2. SCORE! But wait, I then when over to Buytronics, answered the similar questions, and go an offer for $350!  It didn't take long for me commit to the offer from Buytronics.  Apple, Best Buy, and other stores offer similiar trade in services for store credit so if you are looking for cash, make sure you check the full offer before committing.

After confirming the sell, I printed off my prepaid UPS slip and then restored the iPad2 to factory setting to erase my data. Next I packed my iPad2 in a box and dropped the package of at the Post Office. A few days later, I received an email confirming the condition of the iPad2 and my money was on its way!

Interested in selling you used iPhone3 when the iPhone 5 comes out? You will get more money for your used iPhone3 if you answer the product condition questions and confirmed your order before the Apple press conference is over. The longer you wait, the less money you will be offered for your iPhone3. The offer from Gazelle is valid for 30 days from the day you confirm the buy back amount in case you change your mind on selling the item.

Occasionally Gazelle will run a bonus code worth between 5-10% of the buy back amount. You can also get paid in an Amazon Gift Card and get another 5-10% of the buy back amount. These two offers can typically be used together. Gazelle will also buy back DVDs, gaming systems, games, phones, e-readers, and mp3 players. If you gadget is too old or they no longer offer a buy back on that product, Gazelle will offer to recycle the product for free. During the Haiti earthquark, Gazelle was accepting electronic donations to help raise money for the relife efforts.

Why have old gadgets gather dust when you can make money or help a good by recycling them?

Scan, Read, Learn with QR Codes

By Holan Kerrick
The QR Code is the little
square in the
bottom left corner.
The weather has been so nice lately that I ventured off looking for some new plants for the garden.  While looking at the tags I noticed that the plant tags had a Quick Response (QR) code.  I whipped out my cell phone, opened the bar code scanner app and scanned the QR code. It took me to a mobile website with more information on the plant.  There was a woman nearby that I could tell was curious on what I was doing with the tags. After about 10 minutes of following me around the garden center as I scanned annual flowers, she approached me and asked what I was doing with the tags and my Smartphone. I showed her the QR code and explained the process.

How did QR Codes start?

Originally used to track vehicles in Japan, QR codes have taken on a new meaning with consumer advising and packaging with the advancement of Smartphones.  QR codes can lead to a link for coupons, phone numbers, websites, or other information depending on the QR generator.  The easiest way to make a QR code is via a QR code generator website, which can make a customized QR code with a few clicks.

Promotional uses for businesses

The back of my Gadget Girl Tips Business Cards.
On the back of my business cards for my web design business I have a QR code leading potential clients to quickly and easily access my website.  The codes don't have to be limited to business cards. I have seen them used in scavenger hunts and other promotional games among businesses in one town.  One of my favorite restaurants, 54th Street Bar and Grill uses the app front flip, which mergers QR codes with scratch off square, to reveal discount or prize if your ticket is a winner.  With QR codes, consumers' shopping experience turns into a learning experience.

Let's Break it Down Barney Style:

1.  If you already have a bar code reader installed, skip to step 3.  Not sure if you have a bar code reader?  Go to your search bar and enter bar code reader.  If you have one, the app will come up in the results. Don't have a bar code reader?  Go to your smartphone's app market/store and search for bar code reader.  There's plenty of free bar code readers in the app markets.
2.  Install the bar code reader app.
3.  Open the bar code reader app and point you phone's camera.  You will see the little square in the bar code reader.  Some bar code readers will automatically scan the code and will take you to the content while other bar code readers will need you take a picture of the QR Code.

Happy scanning!

Tech Spring Cleaning 102 - Pictures

By Holan Kerrick

If you are like me and take a ton of pictures, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes to spring clean your photographs and memory disk.

Download Your Pictures

Download the pictures from your camera onto your computer or tablet. This is done by using a USB cable or a memory card reader built into your computer.  Most of the time I will delete pictures off the memory card after I download them to the computer.  But like so many people, other things get in the way and I forget to go back to this step.  It is a good idea to download your photos to the hard drive after an event.  It’s painful to realize that the 300 images from Great Aunt Ruth’s Birthday party didn’t get copied and the memory card wipes the pictures because of an error. If you take pictures on a smartphone, you will want to transfer the pictures off the phone every couple of months to help improve the phone’s performance.

Format Your Memory Card

After you remove the pictures from the camera’s memory card, insert the card back into the camera and format the card. .  By formatting the memory card, the camera will be able to write the pictures faster to the card speeding up the time that it takes to reset itself for the next picture. You can usually find the format option under the menu on the camera. If you have problems finding this option, you might want to refer to the camera owner’s manual or website. If you find the manual online go ahead and download it to your computer so you will have it the next time you have a question about your camera. You can also enter “the cameras name- format memory card” into your favorite search engine to get a quick answer. Before you format the card, ensure you have all the photos that you want off the memory card as reformatting will erase all the data.

Clean Out Photographs

Once the photos are on your computer, take a few minutes to delete duplicates or unfocused photos.  My mother takes 20 pictures of one thing hoping she will have at least one good one. If you are like her then pick the best one and delete the other 19. If the picture is unfocused or you can’t see the faces of people you will probably never us it so delete it also.

Organize the Photographs

On my computer I like to keep the photos in folders by year then by event.  Other people like to categorize the pictures by person.  Either is fine as long as it makes sense to you, and you do it the same way each time. Sometimes I rename the individual photos and sometimes I don’t.   It all depends on how much time I have to organize them.   I figure as long as they are in an event folder for that year, that’s good enough for me. However, if you have the time, you might want to include the year and month, name of the person, place, and what the person was doing or something about the photograph that will help you remember something about the picture.

Tag photos

What most people don’t know is that you can tag photos with metadata that is embedded into the image’s file without any change to the photograph.  Tagging is simply applying keywords to help you more quickly search your library with success.  So why do I need to tag photos?     A few years ago, there was a death in the family and we had to quickly gather photographs to be displayed in a digital slideshow at the visitation.  The family pulled up Goggle’s Picasso and did a search for the person’s name and pictures that spanned the person’s life.   They began to appear in minutes. Most photo software will have options to added keywords and locations (also known as geo-tagging) and will even suggest people based on facial recognition.  The great thing about facial recognition is that most programs will learn who’s who in the photos as you start tagging people.  Tagging comes in handy when working on an end of the calendar or sorting through pictures for Christmas Cards.  If you are ready to get started, check out these programs iPhoto (Mac Only), Google Picasa (Windows XP/Vista/7), Adobe Photoshop Products (PC and Mac)

Save them Forever

Burn your photos to a CD/DVD, use an external storage device, or use a digital photo online storage.

Happy Sorting!

ReWind Wednesday: It’s not the end of the world...

By Holan Kerrick

Recently, I was unfriended on Facebook. I know, what a travesty.  Why would someone want to unfriend me? That’s what a lot of people think when trying to figure out why they were dropped.

In today’s social media, when someone unfriends you, it's a shock, and and you might feel an explanation is needed. There are manytimthumb reasons someone might unfriend you on Facebook and don’t take it personally if you fall into one of these categories.

The High School Friend: It’s now 20 years later and you discovered you actually have nothing in common with each other and honestly don't care either.

The Double Poster: These are the people who post everything on their business fan page and then the same post on the personal page. Do I need to be a friend and a fan of your business?

The Oversharing Parent: These people have to share every little thing about their growing family including what color their poop is ...really, TMI (too much information).

The Serial Poster: These people share every moment of their day like we all want to hear what they had for breakfast, followed by a trip to Wal-Mart, etc. Honestly, I don’t care what you did every second of your day just give us the highlight reel.

If you do get unfriend don’t forget it’s not the end of the world, it’s just Facebook.

Let’s break it down:  How to Unfriend Someone
1.  Click the name of the friend you want to unfriend.
2.  In the top right corner under your name, there will be a friends button. Move your mouse of the button
3.  At the bottom of the list is an unfriend button.  Click the button and confirm.

Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?

By Holan Kerrick

In high school, you may have heard the saying “You never know when you will need algebra.”  Fast forward 20 years or so and you now know why the teachers were right.  You will need to know algebra to help your child with their homework.  To make things more interesting, the teachers are now using a new method to find the value of x.

Before you start sweating the small stuff, just remember there are several online resources that will still make you look like a rock star parent.

·         Reference Desk (refdesk.org) has an online homework helper section that ranges from elementary school to college level topics.  Several of the sites offer videos and tutorials explain basic operations and help with the mastery of math skills.

·         Grammarly (grammarly.com) is an online grammar check, instant proofreading, and plagiarism detection. This is a subscription based website but it may be worth the money for the time it will save you from editing your child’s English papers.
·         Cramster (cramster.com) is an online homework helper for high school students.  Subjects include math, algebra, physics, chemistry, calculus, science, engineering, account, English, writing help, business, humanities, and more.  They have step-by-step instructions to 500 textbooks

Tech Spring Cleaning 101– Computer

By Holan Kerrick
It’s that time of the year again! The grass is turning a brilliant shade of green, the birds are chirping, and we all start cleaning the dirt and grime from the winter’s hibernation.  But do we stop to think to include our tech gadgets in our spring cleaning process?  Most people don’t.
Here are a few ways that you can spring clean your computer.
Clean up your hard drive.
Every once in a while computers need to be defragmented (also known as defrag) and the hard drive cleaned up.  When a computer writes to their hard drive they tend to scatter the information like a child playing with toys. By defragmenting the hard drive, the computer picks up all the random items around computer’s hard drive and puts the information in its proper place.  The great thing about this is that most computers have tools pre-installed on your computer to handle the clean up and defrag for you.  You can usually find the clean up and defrag under System Tools.  Typically your computer will ask if you want to clean up the computer before you defrag.  The clean up usually means deleting the temporary internet files, recycle bin, and other temporary system files.  Once you clean up and defrag the hard drive you should notice it running faster.  I like using Glary Utilities as a one stop cleaning solution for my PC.  Have a Mac?  Check out Hazel, your personal housekeeper for your Mac.

Clean up desktop.
Just like your home desk, your computer desk quickly becomes cluttered with unnecessary shortcuts, files, images, and other randomness.  Take five minutes and quickly scan your desktop and files then delete any files you don’t need any more.  I use Window’s start program to pin my most used programs to the program bar to keep shortcuts off my desktop.

Make a Recovery Disk.
Have you ever noticed that when you buy a computer, it no longer comes with the system disks?  That’s because there’s now a pre-installed program that allows you to make your own recovery disk.  This makes it handy if you want to make a recovery disk a year after you bought your computer.  However, it doesn’t make it convenient if let’s say you wipe your computer without making a disk.  You then have to go search for the computer drivers and other information to rebuild your computer.  The pre-installed program can be found under system tools.

Backup your files.
Invest in an external hard drive and copy your files to this drive.  Most external hard drives will come with a program that will allow you to duplicate the files on your computer to your external hard drive.  When I install a new program, I put the program along with the serial number in a file on the external hard for safe keeping.  This way if I have to install the programs again they are all in one place.  This came in real handy a couple of weeks ago when Windows 8 test version was so nice and wiped my program files from my computer.  After a couple of hours, I was up and running again without having to spend a lot of time hunting down programs or serial numbers.
A couple of years ago, I knocked off my external drive from the table, it hit the hard wood floor with a thud and there went my files.  After that I also started keeping an online backup of my music, photos, and other files with an online backup server.  In short, a little program is installed on your computer and it acts like a gatekeeper ensuring you have duplicate files in the same order as your computer.  If something happens to my computer, I can restore the files with one click from the online backup.  I use Carbonite since it has unlimited space and now includes external hard drive in the online backup solution.
Just like cleaning your house, don’t get overwhelmed with all the files on your computer.  Keep to the few steps above and you will be done in no time!
