A man has pleaded no contest to a 2009 attempted murder in Leavenworth.
Stanley J. Cason, 32, entered the plea Friday afternoon in Leavenworth County District Court.

As part of a plea agreement with the prosecution, Cason pleaded no contest to attempted second-degree murder and aggravated burglary.

Cason shot a man three times during a Sept. 25 incident at the victim’s residence on South Broadway.

Cason was accompanied into the residence by Donell Hale. Hale was sentenced in April to more than four years in prison for aggravated battery and attempted aggravated burglary for his role in the incident.

By pleading no contest Friday, Cason didn’t admit guilt but indicated he wouldn’t offer a defense. After entering the plea, he was found guilty.

Before entering into the plea agreement, Cason faced charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and criminal possession of a firearm.

The victim was not in the courtroom Friday. But Deputy County Attorney John Bryant said he attempted to notify the victim by sending a letter to the man’s attorney.

“I have not heard back from him,” Bryant said.

The prosecutor said the plea agreement with Cason does not include a recommendation for sentence.

“We’re free to argue for whatever,” Bryant said after court.

Based on Cason’s criminal history and the state’s sentencing guidelines, Bryant believes he will be able to argue for a prison sentence in excess of 20 years.

Sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 20. Cason remains in custody at the Leavenworth County Jail.
