Joan McBroom is chapter leader of the Two Hearts Chapter of Leavenworth, which is part of The Compassionate Friends organization. The chapter will host a ceremony this weekend as part of The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting. The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 407 Walnut St.

1 What is The Compassionate Friends organization?
The Compassionate Friends is a national support group, with over 600 chapters in the United States. Compassionate Friends exist to provide friendship, understanding and hope to those going through the natural grieving process after the death of a child, to find that they do not walk alone.

2 What is the purpose of The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting ceremony?
The Worldwide Candle Lighting unites families and friends around the globe in lighting candles for one hour to honor and remember children who have died at any age from any cause.

3 Who is invited to the Leavenworth candle lighting ceremony?
Any parent, grandparent, sibling who has lost a child, and any family and friends who wish to support these families.

4 What will be some of the highlights of the local ceremony?
Poetry, readings, music, special guitar selection, lighting of the candles, memory tree and memory table.

5 What other events are hosted by the Two Hearts Chapter of Leavenworth?
We maintain the memorial garden at Cody Park; we just completed a five-year anniversary walk in October and we always participate in the Worldwide Candle Lighting the second Sunday in December.
