More than 150 soldiers returned to Fort Leavenworth Thursday night after a year-long deployment in Iraq.

The members of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 705th Military Police Internment and Resettlement Battalion were greeted by family, friends and others.

Capt. Albert Ross, who was among the returning soldiers, said there was nothing like coming back from a deployment.

“And this welcome is amazing,” he said.

During their deployment, members of the 705th were involved in detention operations.

Ross said the Fort Leavenworth troops turned over two detention facilities to the Iraqi government.

“We trained their correctional officers and turned it over to them,” he said.

He said the thing he liked best about his deployment was the fact that he “brought everybody home.”

The deployment marked only the second time since World War II that a full unit has deployed from Fort Leavenworth.
