Everyone has a remote control inside his brain. And people can use their mute buttons when somebody tries to put them down.

That’s according to Retro Bill, who is visiting Leavenworth schools this week to talk to students about topics such as drug abuse and self esteem.

He spoke Wednesday afternoon at West Intermediate School.

“Stay on that positive channel,” he said as he told fifth-graders about their remote controls.

Retro Bill, whose real name is Bill Russ, appeared Wednesday dressed in his usual flame-covered attire and sporting a large pompadour.

His visits to Leavenworth have become an annual event. He was the subject of a mayor’s proclamation during Tuesday’s Leavenworth City Commission meeting.

Retro Bill’s visit is sponsored by the Leavenworth Police Department and Leavenworth school district, according to Mark Lingenfesler, the Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer.
