A former Basehor-Linwood High School teacher was sentenced to probation Wednesday for having unlawful sexual relations with a student.
The crime occurred in 2008. But Scott A. Neil, 44, Tonganoxie, wasn’t charged until earlier this year, according to court records.
The charge stemmed from a relationship Neil had with a 16-year-old girl while he was still working as a teacher.
Neil pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual relations in February as part of an agreement reached with the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office, according to court records.
In court Wednesday, District Judge Gunnar Sundby said, under state sentencing guidelines, the sentence was “presumptive probation.” Sundby imposed a suspended prison sentence and placed Neil on probation for a year.
“You’ve got to come up with an idea of why you did this,” Sundby said.
The judge said he will require Neil to spend two days in jail. Sundby said this will help Neil concentrate on what happened.
