Team: Lansing High School girls' tennis
Coach: Ed Fenton
Key returners: No varsity players return to the Lady Lions’ squad.
Newcomers to watch: Senior Heather Averill, senior Stephani Brooks, senior Emma Moreland and junior Jessica Long
Team Outlook:
Strengths — The girls are willing to work hard to get better. They are definitely not afraid of hard work. Our four returning JV players are all very good ball strikers with a lot of athletic ability. We’ve got plenty of youth and enthusiasm, 13 of 19 girls on the team are brand new to tennis and seem so excited about learning the game.
Weaknesses — We are very young with no returning players on varsity. Our JV team will consist of all first year players.
Big meets: Shawnee Heights doubles tournament on August 28, Baldwin Invitational on Sept. 15, Mill Valley Invitational on Sept. 18, DeSoto Wildcat Invitational on Sept. 25 and 5A regional on Oct. 7
Coach says: “We have a rebuilding year ahead of us after graduating our entire varsity and several state qualifiers from last season's squad. Of the 19 girls on the team, only six have any experience playing tennis before. This will be a season with a few growing pains I'm sure. I'll be counting on our returning players to be leaders and help pass their work ethics down to the new players so we can continue the tradition of having a strong program and sending players to state.” - Fenton on the 2010 Lady Lions’ tennis team
