Johnny Barnett, who’ll be a senior at Lansing this fall, has qualified to compete at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Norfolk, Va. today through Aug. 8. Barnett specializes in the sprints of the 100, 200 and 400 meters as well as the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays and also competes in the long jump. Barnett also competed in the Primary Nationals in Orlando, Fla. this season. He competes with the KC Storm team, coached by Roderick Mouton and Ernie Greene, both of whom competed for Nike teams during their running careers.
So far this summer, Barnett has collected 16 medals. He competed in both AAU and USATF summer track meets. He’ll be running track for Lansing High School for the first time this spring.
Over his five-year summer track and field career, Barnett has competed in two indoor Nationals and four outdoor Nationals meets. He says his goal for his senior year at Lansing is to win at the KU Relays and earn a 5A state championship.
