Friday night the stage was set for a great Kaw Valley League basketball showdown. The Lansing Lions were visiting the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats and both schools were enthusiastically represented by their students and fans. The game would turn out to be an instant classic with Lansing prevailing in the final seconds by the score of 59-58.
The Lions had trailed by two, 31-29, at halftime but came out firing in the third quarter with a run that was capped off with a Chris Jones dunk. That gave Lansing a 36-33 lead, but Basehor answered back with a 7-0 run to regain a 40-36 advantage. The Lions weren’t going away though, and when Basehor’s Colin Murphy and Lansing’s Izaiah Grice each hit 3s to end the third, the game was knotted at 49.
After the emotional ending to the third quarter, both teams started the final period slowly. Lucas Mein had the first points of the fourth with a jumper that made the score 51-49. The teams continued to trade leads until late in the game when Grice drilled a heart-stopping 3-pointer that made the score its final 59-58.
“I thought our guys were very resilient tonight, coming back on someone’s floor like that in such a hostile environment,” said Lions coach Rod Briggs. “Izaiah Grice stepped up and made a shot when we really needed it and that shows how mentally tough he is.”
Grice had a team-high 19 points in the game and Khalil Bailey added 11. Mein scored eight, Clay Young had seven and Chris Jones put up six. Four points from Mike Miller and two each from Eddie Hunt and Cameron Decker finished out the Lansing scoring.
