The Leavenworth County Republican Party has a situation that requires the convening of a District Convention, due to an individual filing as a Republican candidate for the 1st District, Kansas State Board of Education position who is ineligible due to her position with the Department of Defense.

Dawn Weston of Leavenworth, a Department of Defense employee, filed for the position, but is ineligible due to constraints imposed by the federal Hatch Act. On June 16 she notified the Kansas Secretary of State’s office by certified mail of her conflict of interest and intent to remove her name from the ballot. This necessitates the party nominating a candidate as a replacement on the ballot.

The party has scheduled the district convention from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lansing Community Center, 800 First Terrace.

This action involves both the second and the third Congressional districts and the counties of Leavenworth, Jefferson, Douglas and Wyandotte.

The Precinct Committee Members from within the 1st Education Board District, which includes the above mentioned counties, will select a nominee to be placed onto the November ballot as the Republican nominee for the 1st District, Kansas State Board of Education.
