Phyllis Bass, born the same year as Martin Luther King Jr. and fired in the same 1960s-era civil-rights battles, doubts that even Barack Obama can know exactly how much his own inaugural — the first ever of an African-American man as president of the United States — will mean to men and women of her generation.
“All of these children, they’re just too young,” says the former long-time secretary of a local branch of the NAACP and the current director of the Richard Allen Cultural Center on Kiowa Street in north Leavenworth. “They don’t know what it means. I never thought I’d live see to see this day come. Nobody my age thought they’d live to see this day come.”
