Students from Leavenworth High School are heading for Georgia to compete in the U.S. Army National Raider Championships.

Students from Leavenworth High School are heading for Georgia to compete in the U.S. Army National Raider Championships.

The students will be representing the high school's Junior ROTC program. They will be competing in various activities against other JROTC teams.

“There all very, very physical events,” said retired Lt. Col. Eric Hollister, senior Army instructor for Leavenworth High School JROTC.

The students will be leaving for the U.S. Army National Raider Championships, which will take place in Molena, Georgia, Thursday afternoon.

There will be three teams representing Leavenworth High School. The teams will be competing in male, female and co-educational categories. Each team has 12 cadets from the JROTC program.

Students from surrounding high schools are allowed to participate in Leavenworth High School's JROTC program. And three of the students who are making the trip to Georgia are from Lansing High School, Hollister said.

The Leavenworth High School JROTC program signed up to participate in the the U.S. Army National Raider Championships. The competition will be the culmination of the Leavenworth High School Raiders season.

Hollister said the Raiders compete in various regional events. And the Leavenworth High School JROTC battalion has been participating in national Raiders events for several years.

Last year, a Leavenworth High School team finished in fifth place at a Raiders national competition in the co-educational category. And another team tied for fifth place in the female category.

“The teams this year have done better than the ones last year,” Hollister said. “We're looking for a good result.”

The competition will include events such as a five-kilometer hill run as well as a cross country rescue that will involve a litter carry.

Hollister said this year's teams include students who have participated in previous national competitions.

“We've got some people who have been on it three or four years,” he said.

The local JROTC cadets will be traveling to the U.S. Army National Raider Championships by a chartered bus. They are scheduled to arrive at Molena, Georgia, on Friday.

They are scheduled to return to Leavenworth on Monday.

The cadets will be staying at a Boy Scout camp during the competition.
