A police pursuit of a vehicle was called off early Wednesday morning in north Leavenworth because of safety concerns, a police spokesman said.

The pursuit began at 12:22 a.m. at Sixth and Shawnee streets. An officer attempted to stop a Dodge Charger because of an expired temporary license plate, said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

“The vehicle failed to stop,” Nicodemus said.

The vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed, heading north on Sixth Street. The driver reportedly ran through a stop sign at the Ottawa Street intersection.

Because the driver was operating the vehicle in a reckless manner, the pursuit was terminated, Nicodemus said.
