A Leavenworth company is celebrating its 130th anniversary.

"Let's celebrate 130 years and enjoy," said Kurt Seelbach, president and chief executive officer of Armed Forces Insurance.

Seelbach spoke to AFI employees Tuesday morning as the company celebrated its anniversary.

The company was founded Feb. 7, 1887, at Fort Leavenworth as the Army Co-Operative Fire Association. The organization became Armed Forces Insurance in 1962, according to a news release.

Today, the company provides property and casualty insurance to members of the military, veterans and their family members across the United States, Seelbach said.

AFI officials plan to have a year-long celebration of the company's 130th anniversary.

Seelbach told employees Tuesday that a 130-year history does not guarantee success for AFI in the future. He said only vision and hard work will lead to future success.

Stephen Kempf, former AFI president and chairman, also was on hand for Tuesday morning's celebration.

"I'm always proud of this organization," he said.

Tuesday morning's celebration included the serving of a birthday cake for the insurance company.

Employees also were invited to write their names and when they joined the company on Post-it notes. The employees then were asked to place the notes on a 30-foot long wall graphic at AFI's Leavenworth offices that lists important events from the company's history.
