When they met Wednesday, members of the Leavenworth Board of Education approved the appointment of new high school and middle school principals.

Christy Lentz will take over the duties of Leavenworth High School principal for the 2017-2018 school year. She will replace Tom Barry, who is leaving the school district at the end of the current academic year.

Lentz currently works at the school district’s central office as the director of teaching and learning. She previously worked at Leavenworth High School as an assistant principal and associate principal.

In addition to her duties as the high school principal, she will begin serving as the district’s director of secondary teaching and learning.

Laura Batson will be taking over as the principal of Richard Warren Middle School for the 2017-2018 school year. She will be replacing Scott Kedrowski, who also is leaving the district at the end of the current school year.

Batson currently serves as the principal of Earl Lawson Elementary School. She previously worked in different capacities at Warren Middle School.

In addition to taking on the duties of middle school principal, Batson will serve as the director of elementary teaching and learning.

“Mrs. Lentz and Mrs. Batson will both be returning to schools they have worked in previously, and are excited to work in a new capacity with our staff and school families to prepare our students for success,” Leavenworth Superintendent Mike Roth said in a news release.

Board members approved the appointments by approving a staffing report. The report listed numerous personnel changes including the renewal of contracts of other principals in the district.

The staffing report was approved by a vote of 6-1. Board member Loyal Torkelson voted against the motion.

The vote was taken after board members met behind closed doors in executive session for 45 minutes to discuss personnel matters.

Among the other personnel changes listed in the staffing report is the appointment of Stefanie Bourne as interim principal of Earl Lawson Elementary School during the 2017-2018 school year.

Bourne currently serves as an assistant principal at the school.

Also Wednesday, Roth announced that the last day of school, May 24, will only be a half day of classes instead of a full day as previously scheduled.

Roth said the finals schedule for that day is already set to be only a half day at Leavenworth High School.

“We would like to make that districtwide to make it consistent,” he said.

The superintendent said teachers will use the remaining half of the work day for professional development.

He said board members did not need to vote to approve the change unless there opposition to the proposal. No one objected to the idea.

Roth said he will start communicating with students, patrons and staff about the change.
