Crazy Cow 5K to still take place

After 11 years of the Basehor Dairy Days, the community festival will not take place this year.

But organizers are planning to bring back the event in 2018. In fact, organizers are wanting to expand the event next year.

“We have been thinking that we need to do something bigger for Dairy Days,” said Ashley Razak, a member of the Basehor Dairy Days Association.

She said organizers are taking this year to re-evaluate the event.

Even though the festival has been postponed for this year, the annual Crazy Cow 5K run and walk will take place June 3. The five-kilometer race will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Basehor-Linwood High School, 155th Street and Parallel Road.

In the past, the race has taken place in conjunction with Basehor Dairy Days. And the Crazy Cow 5K serves as fundraiser for the festival and the Basehor Chamber of Commerce, according to Razak, who also serves as the race director.

People can visit the website, basehordairydays.wordpress.com, for more information about the Crazy Cow 5K run and walk. People also can visit the website to register for the event.

Razak said organizers of Basehor Dairy Days are looking for ways to attract more people to the festival in the future.

“We need to add a couple of elements to the event,” she said.

She said organizers of the festival also are re-evaluating its location.

“We’ve looked at different locations around the city,” she said.

Last year, Basehor Dairy Days took place at Basehor-Linwood High School. But there is construction at that location this year.

One change that already is planned is the date of the event. In the past, Basehor Dairy Days has taken place the first Saturday of June. Next year, it will take place the third Saturday in June.

Razak said Basehor Dairy Days previously competed with other special events in the region when it took place the first weekend in June.

So far, registration for the Crazy Cow 5K is low this year. Razak said people can continue to register through the morning of the race. However, late registration may not guarantee that a participant will receive a T-shirt for the event.

The cost to participate for the in the race is $30 for each adult and $20 for each child who is 13 or younger.

In addition to benefiting Basehor Dairy Days and the Chamber of Commerce, the Crazy Cow 5K will raise money this year for the Basehor PRIDE organization.
