Members of the Leavenworth Board of Education voted down a proposal for giving employees additional paid time off this summer. But the idea will brought back for further consideration.

Board members voted 6-1 against the proposal when they met Wednesday. Board member Loyal Torkelson, who made the motion for what he called an alternative work schedule, was the only one who voted for it.

However, district staff members were asked to bring back additional information, so the issue can be discussed again during a meeting in June.

Torkelson proposed allowing school district employees take off the afternoons of two Fridays in June and two Fridays in July.

As part of his motion, Torkelson said the superintendent would have the discretion of granting the time off for employees.

Torkelson said district employees work hard.

"I just think it would be a nice gesture on our part," he said.

Board member Nancy Klemp provided a second to Torkelson's motion so there would be a vote. But Klemp said she did not support the motion.

Klemp argued employees already have other time off. Klemp said she has an obligation to the taxpayers who pay the salaries of the district employees.

She argued that if there is no work for the employees to do, the district may have too large of a staff.

Board member Verna Raines said companies have similar programs to allow time off for staff to improve employee morale.

Board president Mark Carney said district employees are dedicated people.

"There's just a lot of extra time put in that you don't see," he said.

Superintendent Mike Roth said the idea had been brought to him by Torkelson.

"This is something that he was passionate about," Roth said.

The superintendent said the proposal would apply to hourly employees.

Board vice president Doug Darling said he would like to have more research regarding the issue.

He suggested staff members can look into the issue, and the matter can be brought up again during the June meeting.

After the motion was defeated, Carney said staff will take a look at the issue.
