Beginning in August 2018, Basehor-Linwood High School will be part of a new yet unnamed sports and extracurricular activities league.  Currently part of the Kaw Valley League with Lansing, Tonganoxie, Piper and Bonner Springs high schools, BLHS will become part of the new league which will include Turner High School, Topeka’s Shawnee Heights High School and DeSoto High School in addition to local rivals Lansing and Leavenworth high schools.

Three current Kaw Valley League schools – Bonner Springs, Piper, Tonganoxie – will be joining the Frontier League. That league also currently includes high schools in DeSoto, Spring Hill, Eudora, Ottawa, Baldwin, Paola and Louisburg.

“All of the Kaw Valley League schools were invited to apply to the Frontier League but they made it clear they were not wanting to add larger or growing schools to the league,” said BLHS principal Jarred Fuhrman. “With our 2016-2017 enrollment at BLHS at 710 students, and the fact that we are the third fastest growing school district in the state, we could exceed 800 students in two or three years and possibly have over 900 students in the building within five years. With this growth, there is a likelihood that we may make the step to 5A in classification.”

Since there would only be three remaining teams in the Kaw Valley League, Basehor-Linwood had to make a tough decision. USD 458 began exploring the possibility of creating a new league that would consist of growing 4A and some 5A schools as well as potentially joining the Frontier League.

Taking into consideration what is best for the students is paramount in that decision. While league designation most generally is thought of in terms of sports rivalries, leagues also impact extracurricular activities such as band and debate.

In the end, the decision was made to have BLHS join five other schools in creating a new league. Public input is being sought for the name of the new league. Suggestions may be made via the school district’s website at www.usd458.org
