TONGANOXIE – Lyndi Pierce, a 10-year-old Leavenworth girl, likes the bunnies at the 91st Leavenworth County Fair.

“They are so soft,” said Pierce, who visited the fair this week along with friends from the Women’s Community Y.

Pierce was one of about a dozen children on a day-long field trip to the fair.

Before arriving at the fair, the children, ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old, were briefed about the fair.

Staff at the Women’s Community Y talked to them about what kinds of animals they would be seeing. They also talked to the children about how the awards and contests work.

“They got a lesson about what the county fair is,” said Jodi Shelton of the Women’s Community Y. Shelton chaperoned the children on the field trip.

Shelton said Women’s Community Y Director Lisa Schmidt “encouraged this trip.”

The Leavenworth County Fair continues through Saturday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

On Friday, there will be a livestock auction in the show arena beginning at 7 p.m. There will also be a pie baking contest. An Off Road Challenge begins at 7:30 p.m. in the arena.

Saturday’s schedule includes a mud run at noon, turtle races, a kids’ pedal tractor pull and a watermelon eating contest.

The Broncs, Bulls & Bareback rodeo event begins at 8 p.m. in the arena.
