More than 200 children have new shoes as a result of a weekend ministry by two local churches.

Members of the Lansing First Southern Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church teamed up to host another in a series of Engage events.

“Engage is our all-church, all hands on deck ministry outreach to the cities of Lansing and Leavenworth,” said Nathan Gunter, pastor of Lansing First Southern Baptist Church. “Since we entered into partnership with Calvary Baptist Church in Leavenworth this year, we are continuing to pursue new and creative ways to serve our cities and share the hope we have found in Jesus.”

The weekend ministry began with a free back-to-school shoe giveaway at Wollman Park.

Gunter said approximately 250 pairs of shoes were given away that night.

Friday night also featured a free swim party at the Wollman Aquatic Center. Participants were treated to free food, swimming and a movie at the aquatic center. Gunter said volunteers served more than 800 hot dogs.

The Engage ministry event continued Saturday as church members teamed up to give away free slushies at local Sonic restaurants. Volunteers at Calvary Baptist Church gave away free backpacks and Bibles on Saturday.

Gunter said approximately 100 members from both of the churches participated as volunteers for the weekend event.

“Engage is part of the core identity of our church,” Gunter said.

Gunter said Engage ministry events take place three times each year. In the spring, the church served hot dogs at a local soccer field. Church members also organized a community worship service at Haymarket Square. The event included free pancakes and photos.

Another Engage event is being planned for the fall, Gunter said.
