The Leavenworth Animal Control shelter is full. And the agency is waiving adoption fees this month to encourage people to adopt animals.

“All the fees are waived for the month of August,” said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

Animal Control operates as part of the Police Department.

Nicodemus believes a combination of factors can be blamed for the shelter being full of cats and dogs. He said this has not resulted in animals being euthanized. But he acknowledged department officials will have to make some decisions if the shelter is still full at the end of the month.

“We’re trying to get ahead of this,” he said.

He said the announcement about the waiver of fees already has generated attention for the shelter.

The Leavenworth Animal Control shelter is located at 2019 S. Third St. behind the Price Chopper store. The shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second Saturday of each month.
