Leavenworth police discontinued a pursuit after the fleeing driver went across a bridge into Missouri, a police spokesman said.

The incident was reported at 6:20 a.m. Monday. The pursuit began in the 700 block of North Fifth Street.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said an officer attempted to stop a Saturn Vue because the sport utility vehicle had a license plate that was registered to another vehicle.

Nicodemus said the officer checked on the plate after a passenger in the SUV was dropped off in an area that is considered to have drug activity.

“It was suspicious,” Nicodemus said.

The driver of the SUV did not stop for the officer and continued to travel north on Fifth Street. The driver allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign at Metropolitan Avenue and turned east. The driver then traveled across the Centennial Bridge into Missouri.
