People visiting Leavenworth stores during the Labor Day weekend may run into firefighters.

Members of the Leavenworth Fire Department will once again be participating in the Fill the Boot campaign to collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

"It's been kind of a tradition, an annual tradition," Jeff Porter said.

Porter is a driver-operator for the Leavenworth Fire Department, and he organizes the Fill the Boot collection efforts in Leavenworth.

"The Leavenworth community has always been very generous," he said.

Last year, Leavenworth firefighters collected $4,800 for the MDA.

He said firefighters have a goal of raising at least that much again this year.

Throughout the weekend, firefighters will be accepting donations in front of the Wal-Mart store, 5000 10th Ave., and Dillons, 720 Eisenhower Road.

As the name of the campaign indicates, members of the Leavenworth Fire Department will be asking people to drop their donations into firefighter boots.

Porter said firefighters also will be handing out stickers.

"The kids really like the stickers," he said.

The firefighters participating in this weekend's collection effort will be on duty. Porter said this means they may have to leave at times to respond to calls.
