Registration is still open for the 2017 Hog Wild BBQ contest in downtown Leavenworth.

The event is slated for Sept. 8-9 in the parking lots located at Second and Cherokee streets.

The event is hosted by Leavenworth Main Street and Grinders High Noon.

“It should be a fun event,” said Wendy Scheidt, executive director of Leavenworth Main Street.

She said about 20 teams have entered the contest as of Thursday. She expects about 25 teams will be in the contest. The entry fee is $210 per team.

Scheidt said the deadline to enter a team in the barbecue contest is Wednesday.

The contest is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Representatives of the barbecue society will be on hand to judge the contest entries.

The event will be held from 3-11 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event will be held rain or shine.

Grinders owner STRETCH is expected to attend the event Saturday, Scheidt said.

The event also will feature a Hog Wild Kid Que, a barbecue contest for children, beginning at noon Saturday. Children entering the contest should bring enough meat to grill two hamburgers that will be judged. The entry fee for the Hog Wild Kid Que is $5 per child.

The two-day event will feature numerous food vendors, beer vendors, live music and games for children.

It all starts Friday in downtown Leavenworth.

At 6:30 p.m., the Cars for Heroes organization will give away a free car to a veteran of the military.

The band Saucy Jack will perform from 7-11 p.m. Sacred Circus will perform Friday night as well. The group is made up of aerial performers, jugglers and fire-breathers who will perform several acts throughout the night.

The band People Watching will perform at noon Saturday. The Penny Black band will perform at 1 p.m. Saturday.

There will be a children’s chicken wing eating contest at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. There will also be a hot sauce eating challenge.

The awards ceremony will begin at 3 p.m.
